SSBP3 antisense RNA 1 (SSBP3-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA located on chromosome 1 (1p32.3), transcribed antisense to the SSBP3 gene. SSBP3-AS1 is thought to regulate gene expression by acting as a microRNA sponge, controlling levels of specific microRNAs and thus influencing expression of downstream protein-coding genes. It can interact with proteins, impacting cellular signaling pathways and potentially modulating processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, and tumor cell migration. Disease associations include susceptibility to gliomas and retinoblastoma, though its role in these conditions is still under investigation. SSBP3-AS1 is not considered a canonical therapeutic target, as it is not a receptor, enzyme, or channel, but emerging research investigates its potential as a regulator in oncology and neurodevelopmental disorders. No drugs or biomarkers currently exist for clinical targeting or monitoring of SSBP3-AS1.
