Overview

SSX family member 6, pseudogene (SSX6P) is a genomic locus that has high sequence similarity to SSX genes implicated in synovial sarcoma, but lacks regulatory elements and is not believed to encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as SSX6P are evolutionary remnants that may occasionally be transcribed into RNA and rarely translated into short peptides, though most have no known biological function or disease role. The SSX protein family, but not their pseudogenes, is relevant in cancer biology and immune response[1][2][3]. Experimentally, distinguishing SSX pseudogenes and their respective functional genes is difficult due to high sequence conservation, complicating genetic and transcriptomic analyses. Most pseudogenes are considered non-targets for drug development and clinical applications[2][3].
