Overview

ST segment deviation is a term that describes displacement of the ST segment in an electrocardiogram (ECG) from its baseline (isoelectric line). The ST segment, normally flat and isoelectric, represents the period between the end of ventricular depolarization and the beginning of ventricular repolarization[1][2][3]. Changes in the height (elevation or depression) of the ST segment can indicate various cardiac pathologies. Most notably, **ST segment elevation** is a hallmark of acute transmural myocardial infarction and dictates urgent therapy. ST segment depression is associated with subendocardial ischemia or other nonischemic conditions. These findings are not molecular entities, but important clinical markers guiding diagnosis and treatment in cardiovascular medicine[4][5].
