Overview

ST20 antisense RNA 1 (ST20-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) encoded on human chromosome 15q25.1, annotated as ENSG00000259642 and with UniProt accession Q8NBB2[4]. It is classified as an antisense RNA because it is transcribed from the DNA strand opposite to the ST20 gene. As a lncRNA, it does not code for a protein and is not a receptor, enzyme, or classic therapeutic target. ST20-AS1 is implicated in the regulation of gene expression, potentially through epigenetic mechanisms, including recruiting chromatin modifiers or binding to protein factors involved in transcriptional regulation[4]. Data suggest that ST20-AS1 is differentially expressed in some cancers, such as paraganglioma-pheochromocytoma, where it is found to be upregulated[4]. However, its precise biological functions and disease associations remain largely uncharacterized, and no drugs are known to directly interact with this RNA. While lncRNAs in general can act as scaffolds, decoys, or regulators impacting cell signaling and gene transcription, specific functional studies for ST20-AS1 are limited. Summary: - ST20-AS1 is a lncRNA, not a protein, receptor, or conventional drug target. - Main function is likely regulation of gene expression and epigenetic modulation. - Shows altered expression in some cancers; no direct therapeutic or drug interactions established[4].
