Overview

ST6 N-acetylgalactosaminide alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 4 pseudogene 1 (ST6GALNAC4P1) is a human pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the functional ST6 N-acetylgalactosaminide alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 4 (ST6GALNAC4) gene, which encodes an enzyme involved in sialylation of glycoproteins and glycolipids. As a pseudogene, ST6GALNAC4P1 is not known to encode a functional protein and is not considered a therapeutic target. While some pseudogenes can regulate gene expression or be implicated in genetic disorders through gene conversion, RNA interference, or serving as mutation “decoys,” there is no evidence for such activity with this specific pseudogene. However, like other pseudogenes, its high sequence similarity to its functional parent can pose challenges for genetic testing such as sequencing read misalignment, which may cause diagnostic errors. There are no known drugs, mechanisms, or biomarkers associated specifically with ST6GALNAC4P1.

Biological functions

Other (Pseudogenes are generally non-coding; some can regulate gene expression at DNA, RNA, or protein levels, but no documented regulatory function for ST6GALNAC4P1 itself)
03

Disease associations

Other (Pseudogenes may influence genetic testing or gene regulation, but no direct disease association is reported for ST6GALNAC4P1 specifically)
04

Safety considerations

Potential interference with genetic testing of the parental gene ST6GALNAC4, causing misalignment or false variant calling in sequencing studies
