Stabilin-1 protein (STAB1)

Target
STAB1
Molecular classification
Receptor, Scavenger receptor, Transmembrane glycoprotein

Overview

Stabilin‑1 is a large transmembrane scavenger receptor encoded by the STAB1 gene on chromosome 3p21.1. It is primarily expressed on sinusoidal endothelial cells in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. The protein contains multiple fasciclin-like, EGF-like, laminin-type EGF-like domains, and a C-type lectin-like hyaluronan-binding module. Stabilin‑1 functions as a scavenger receptor for acetylated LDL and can bind both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria—suggesting roles in host defense against pathogens. It also participates in endocytosis of advanced glycosylation end products and cycles rapidly between the plasma membrane and early endosomes. Additional biological roles include involvement in angiogenesis, lymphocyte homing, cell adhesion, immune regulation during inflammation or infection (e.g., viral myocarditis), as well as potential influence on atherosclerosis development through effects on endothelial function.[1][3][5][6][7]
