Overview

Qi stagnation is a core pattern of disharmony in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), referring to the obstruction or inadequate movement of Qi (“vital energy”) within the body’s meridian system[1][2][3][5]. It is associated with symptoms such as localized or systemic pain, emotional disturbances (irritability, depression, mood swings), digestive complaints, and menstrual irregularities. TCM attributes its causes to emotional stress, sedentary lifestyle, and improper diet, and aims to treat it through interventions such as acupuncture, herbal formulas, and lifestyle changes[1][2][3][5][7]. Qi stagnation is a theoretical construct not recognized by modern biomedical science, and there is no scientific evidence for the physical existence of Qi or molecular correlates for its "stagnation"[6]. Qi stagnation is not a molecule, receptor, or drug target as defined by contemporary pharmacology.
