STAM antisense RNA 2 (STAM-AS2)

Target
STAM-AS2
Molecular classification
Antisense RNA, Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Natural antisense transcript (NAT)
01

Overview

STAM antisense RNA 2 is an RNA transcript generated from the region of the genome opposite to the STAM2 gene. Antisense RNAs, like STAM-AS2, act at the RNA level to regulate the expression of their sense partner genes through mechanisms such as hybridization to messenger RNA or recruiting chromatin modifiers. While antisense RNAs are broadly important in controlling gene expression, and have been proposed as research and potential therapeutic tools, there is no evidence that STAM-AS2 itself is a characterized therapeutic target, and little to no disease-specific literature describes its phenotype or utility[5][8].

Mechanism of action

Antisense RNA molecules regulate target genes by binding complementary mRNA and inhibiting translation, or by modifying chromatin state[4][5][8].

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expressionTranscriptional interference and epigenetic regulation (general for antisense RNAs)
04

Disease associations

Other (general antisense RNAs implicated in cancer and genetic disease modulation; no disease-specific data for STAM-AS2)
05

Safety considerations

General challenges for antisense RNA therapeutics include delivery efficiency, off-target effects, and immune responses[6].
