STAM divergent transcript (STAM-DT), also known as STAM antisense RNA 1 (head to head), STAM-AS1, and locus3182, is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) gene transcribed divergently from the promoter of the STAM protein-coding gene[4][3]. Divergent transcription refers to the phenomenon where both coding and noncoding transcripts initiate in opposite directions from shared promoters, and is a widespread feature of mammalian genome regulation[1][3]. At the STAM-DT locus, two alternatively spliced lncRNA transcripts are generated in the orientation opposite to the STAM gene[3]. These lncRNAs are generally less stable and are subject to exosome-mediated degradation, although in some cases they can accumulate to detectable levels and may participate in the regulation of their sense (protein-coding) partner or aspects of cell differentiation[3]. There is no evidence that STAM-DT functions as a receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target, and interacting drugs or biomarker roles have not been established. Its precise biological or disease roles are poorly characterized, typical for many noncoding RNAs generated by divergent transcription in the genome[2][3][4].
