Overview

Staphylococcal secretory antigen A (SsaA), also historically referred to as protein antigen 5, is an immunodominant surface-associated and secreted protein found in Staphylococcus aureus. It belongs to a family of lytic transglycosylases that play a critical role in the degradation and remodeling of the bacterial peptidoglycan layer, which is essential for cell growth and division. Due to its high expression during human infections and its accessibility on the bacterial surface, SsaA is considered a significant therapeutic target for the development of vaccines and passive immunization strategies. Research indicates that antibodies against SsaA can enhance opsonophagocytosis and provide protective immunity in animal models of staphylococcal disease. Furthermore, its role in maintaining cell wall integrity makes it a potential target for novel antibacterial agents designed to disrupt bacterial replication. As an immunodominant antigen, it is frequently used in diagnostic assays to detect S. aureus exposure and monitor the host immune response.
