Staphylococcus aureus alpha toxin (Hla), also known as alpha-hemolysin, is a major cytotoxic protein secreted by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. It forms heptameric transmembrane pores in eukaryotic cell membranes, leading to ion flux, apoptosis, necrosis, and disruption of tissue barriers. It is a key virulence factor in S. aureus infections, contributing to diseases such as sepsis and pneumonia.
