Staphylococcus aureus capsular polysaccharide serotype 8 (CP8) is a high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymer that forms a protective capsule around certain S. aureus strains. This capsule is one of the two predominant serotypes (the other being serotype 5, CP5) found among clinical isolates of S. aureus. The presence of this capsule enhances bacterial virulence by impeding phagocytosis and promoting persistence in the host bloodstream. It consists of repeating trisaccharide units made up of three rare monosaccharides: N-acetyl d-mannosaminuronic acid (ManNAcA), N-acetyl l-fucosamine (l-FucNAc), and N-acetyl d-fucosamine (d-FucNAc).
Antibodies targeting CP8 can promote opsonization and enhance killing by immune cells when administered as antisera or induced via conjugate vaccines
