Staphylococcus aureus Cell Membrane (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Lipid Bilayer, Membrane, Cell Membrane
01

Overview

The cell membrane of *Staphylococcus aureus* is a critical lipid bilayer separating the cytoplasm from the external environment, working with the peptidoglycan cell wall. It's composed primarily of phosphatidylglycerol (PG), lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol (Lys-PG), and cardiolipin (CL), with the ratio changing based on environmental conditions. Lys-PG confers resistance to cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs). The membrane contains functional microdomains (FMMs) organized by flotillin A (FloA), which coordinate cell wall biosynthesis, beta-lactam antibiotic resistance, and secretion. Essential proteins for lipid metabolism, like PlsY and CdsA, exhibit large-scale patterns dependent on MreD. The membrane plays a key role in virulence and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
