Overview

Staphylococcus aureus colonization refers to the process by which the bacterium *S. aureus* establishes itself on human tissues, most notably in the nasal cavity (nares) and on skin, without necessarily causing disease. This colonization is a critical precursor to infection and transmission. It involves bacterial adhesion to host tissues via MSCRAMMs and WTA, competition with commensal microbiota, and evasion of the host immune response. The anterior nares are the primary site of colonization.
