Staphylococcus aureus Peptidoglycan (PGN)

Target
PGN
Molecular classification
Polymer, Cell Wall Component, Pathogen-Associated Molecular Pattern (PAMP)
01

Overview

Peptidoglycan is the major structural component of the *Staphylococcus aureus* cell wall, providing mechanical strength and rigidity while maintaining cellular integrity. It forms a thick three-dimensional mesh that encapsulates the bacterium, protecting it from environmental stresses and contributing to its pathogenicity. Peptidoglycan fragments are recognized by host immune systems as pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), triggering inflammatory responses. Its synthesis is targeted by several antibiotics (e.g., β-lactams), but resistance mechanisms complicate treatment strategies.
