The type 5 capsular polysaccharide (CP5) is a surface-associated carbohydrate structure produced by Staphylococcus aureus. It is one of the two predominant capsular serotypes (the other being type 8, CP8) found among clinical isolates of S. aureus. The capsule forms a protective layer around the bacterial cell wall. CP5 plays a critical role in S. aureus virulence by impeding phagocytosis, which allows the bacteria to persist in the bloodstream and evade immune clearance. Purified CP5 has been investigated as a vaccine target antigen for preventing staphylococcal infections.
