The type 8 capsular polysaccharide (CP8) is a surface-associated carbohydrate polymer produced by Staphylococcus aureus. It is a major virulence factor, impeding phagocytosis and promoting immune evasion. CP8 is one of the most prevalent capsule types found in clinical isolates, making it a key target for vaccine development. The repeating unit is a trisaccharide composed of N-acetyl-d-mannosaminuronic acid, N-acetyl-l-fucosamine, and N-acetyl-d-fucosamine. Antibodies against CP8 have shown protective effects in animal models.
Antibodies targeting CP8 promote opsonophagocytosis and complement-mediated killing of S. aureus.
