Staphylococcus aureus virulence factors are a diverse set of molecules produced by the bacterium that contribute to its pathogenicity. These factors enable S. aureus to colonize hosts, evade immune responses, and damage host tissues. Key categories include toxins (e.g., hemolysins, leukocidins, exfoliative toxins, enterotoxins, PSMs), immune evasion factors (e.g., Protein A, SCIN, CHIPS), adhesion molecules (e.g., ClfA/B, FnBPA/B), and enzymes (e.g. coagulase, proteases). The expression of these virulence factors is tightly regulated, notably by the agr quorum-sensing system. Targeting these virulence factors represents a promising strategy for developing novel anti-infective therapies.
