Overview

Staphylococcus capitis is a Gram-positive, coagulase-negative bacterium that primarily colonizes human skin and mucous membranes, especially on the head, arms, and scalp. While typically a commensal organism, it can become an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in neonates and immunocompromised individuals, due to its ability to form biofilms and acquire resistance to multiple antibiotics. S. capitis is distinguished by its capacity for biofilm formation (mediated by genes such as icaRADBC), and clinical isolates often harbor resistance genes including mecA, nsr, and cfr, leading to resistance against methicillin, nisin, and linezolid, respectively. Two subspecies are recognized: subsp. capitis (less virulent) and subsp. ureolyticus (more associated with clinical infection and antibiotic resistance). The species poses the greatest risk in hospitals, especially neonatal intensive care units, where it can persist and disseminate via biofilm-contaminated medical devices.
