Staphylococcus epidermidis capsular polysaccharide type 1 (PS1) is a major surface antigen found on specific pathogenic strains of this coagulase-negative staphylococcus. It serves as a critical virulence factor by providing a protective capsule that helps the bacteria evade the host immune system, primarily by inhibiting opsonophagocytosis by polymorphonuclear leukocytes. PS1 is chemically distinct from other staphylococcal polysaccharides like the intercellular adhesin (PIA/PNAG) and is often associated with strains involved in serious clinical infections such as neonatal sepsis and catheter-related bacteremia. As a therapeutic target, PS1 has been investigated for the development of passive and active immunization strategies, including conjugate vaccines and monoclonal antibodies designed to enhance bacterial clearance. Its role in disease is primarily linked to the survival of S. epidermidis in the bloodstream and on medical implants, making it a focal point for preventing healthcare-associated infections.
