Staphylococcus leukocidin ED (LukED)

Target
LukED
Molecular classification
Pore-forming toxin, Bicomponent toxin, Cytotoxin
01

Overview

Staphylococcus leukocidin ED (LukED) is a bicomponent, pore-forming cytotoxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus. It targets and lyses host immune cells, particularly neutrophils and erythrocytes, by binding to chemokine receptors such as ACKR1, CCR2, and CCR5 and forming a transmembrane pore. This promotes bacterial survival and virulence, making it a major virulence factor in systemic S. aureus infections. Expression levels can be modulated by antibiotic exposure.
