Target intelligence / Profile preview
StAR-related lipid transfer domain–containing protein 7 (STARD7) is a lipid transfer protein that specifically binds and transports phosphatidylcholine (PC) between cellular membranes, most notably from the endoplasmic reticulum to mitochondria[1][2][3][7]. STARD7 is essential for maintaining mitochondrial membrane composition, structure, and function, influencing cell energy production, proliferation, migration, and differentiation[1][2][6][7]. It exists in two isoforms: a precursor targeted to the outer mitochondrial membrane and a mature form that localizes within mitochondria, processed by peptidases such as MPP and PARL[3][5]. Dysregulation of STARD7 can be associated with tumor progression, neurodegenerative diseases including familial myoclonic epilepsy, and chronic inflammatory diseases like IBD[1][2][3][6][7]. No drugs are currently known to interact directly with STARD7, though its role in essential cellular lipid transport and multiple diseases makes it a potential therapeutic target for future drug development[1][2][3][7].
No drugs with a defined mechanism targeting STARD7 are reported. Based on its function, hypothetical mechanisms would include: Inhibition or modulation of phosphatidylcholine transport to affect membrane integrity; Restoration or enhancement of mitochondrial lipid delivery for treating mitochondrial or inflammatory diseases.
