StAR-related lipid transfer domain-containing protein 10 (STARD10) is a member of the START (steroidogenic acute regulatory-related lipid transfer) domain family of proteins, functioning primarily as a phospholipid transfer protein that can transport phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine between intracellular membranes[3][4]. STARD10 also binds phosphoinositides, playing a crucial role in controlling the composition of membrane lipids and biogenesis of insulin secretory granules in pancreatic β-cells; reduced STARD10 expression is linked to impaired insulin secretion and altered proinsulin processing in type 2 diabetes[1][5]. Its expression is associated with some cancers, with lower levels correlating to poorer outcomes in breast cancer, though its precise role in oncogenesis remains unclear[3][4]. STARD10 is ubiquitously expressed in various tissues and may also be involved in regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling and metabolic processes such as sperm maturation or fertilization[2][4].
