STARD4 antisense RNA 1 (STARD4-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the STARD4 gene locus on chromosome 5. It does not encode a protein but regulates cellular processes through RNA-mediated mechanisms. STARD4-AS1 has been implicated in the regulation of ferroptosis and necroptosis, two forms of programmed cell death relevant to cancer biology. It is differentially expressed in oral squamous cell carcinoma, where lower expression is associated with tumor cells, and functional studies suggest that knockdown of STARD4-AS1 can inhibit cancer cell proliferation and migration, while promoting ferroptosis. It is considered a biomarker for prognosis in certain cancers and is a candidate for RNA-based therapeutics targeting cancer and immune modulation.
