"STAT3 messenger RNA" is the single-stranded RNA transcript synthesized from the STAT3 gene, which encodes the STAT3 protein—a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. The mRNA is a natural molecule in cells and is not itself a canonical therapeutic target; rather, the encoded STAT3 protein is the drug target in most disease settings. The STAT3 mRNA can be regulated at the level of localization, stability, splicing, and translation, with emerging research indicating that post-transcriptional regulation (for example, by RNA-binding proteins like FMRP) can affect cellular processes relevant to cancer metastasis[1]. Therapeutic targeting of STAT3 mRNA by RNA interference or antisense oligonucleotides is an experimental approach in early-stage research. However, the term "STAT3 messenger RNA" is not the standard or canonical name for a therapeutic target: the actual drug target is the "Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3" protein. The mRNA itself should only be considered a target in the context of RNA-targeted therapies.
For antisense oligonucleotides or siRNA: bind and degrade STAT3 mRNA to prevent translation of STAT3 protein. Small-molecule inhibitors do not target the mRNA.
