Stathmin-3 (STMN3)

Target
STMN3
Molecular classification
Microtubule-destabilizing protein, Stathmin/oncoprotein 18 family, Cytoskeletal regulatory protein
01

Overview

Stathmin-3 is a microtubule-destabilizing phosphoprotein encoded by the STMN3 gene, primarily expressed in neuronal tissues. As a member of the stathmin/oncoprotein 18 family, it regulates microtubule dynamics, impacting processes such as neuron projection development and neuronal plasticity. It forms complexes with tubulin, disrupting microtubule formation and facilitating cellular events crucial for neural differentiation and signaling. Stathmin-3's microtubule-destabilizing activity is antagonized by the transcription factor STAT3. While it shares functional similarity with other stathmin family members, its role as a therapeutic target or biomarker is currently unestablished.

Disease associations

Neurodegenerative disease (potential involvement by analogy to other stathmin family members; direct evidence for STMN3 role is limited)Cancer (microtubule regulators are implicated in cancer biology, but direct evidence for STMN3 is sparse)Other (not a canonical marker for any major disease)
