STAU2 antisense RNA 1 (STAU2-AS1)

Target
STAU2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA, Antisense RNA
01

Overview

STAU2 antisense RNA 1 (STAU2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA, transcribed from the genomic region antisense to the STAU2 gene. Antisense RNAs such as STAU2-AS1 regulate gene expression through mechanisms including transcriptional interference, modulation of mRNA stability, and post-transcriptional regulation. STAU2-AS1 itself does not encode a protein and has not been characterized as a direct therapeutic target. While STAU2 (the protein) is involved in mRNA decay and neural function[1][2][4], STAU2-AS1 may be involved in regulating these processes indirectly, but its specific biological roles and disease relevance remain to be clarified[3][5]. Key distinctions: - STAU2 is a well-studied double-stranded RNA-binding protein with roles in mRNA degradation (Staufen-mediated mRNA decay) and synaptic function[1][2][4], while STAU2-AS1 is an antisense non-coding RNA with regulatory potential, but not traditionally considered a molecular target for drugs.

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; as a non-coding RNA, STAU2-AS1 does not directly interact with drugs or mediate classical mechanisms of action

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression by antisense mechanismsPotential involvement in epigenetic regulation and mRNA stability
04

Disease associations

Disease associations likely via gene regulation networks; direct disease roles for STAU2-AS1 have not been defined in available literaturePossible roles in biological processes/diseases inferred from associations in Harmonizome, but not yet experimentally validated
05

Safety considerations

None known; as a non-coding RNA, safety concerns are not relevant outside of experimental gene modulation
