STEAP family member 1B (STEAP1B) is a member of the STEAP (six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate) protein family and is predicted to function as a multi-pass transmembrane protein mainly located at the plasma membrane and endosomes[3][5]. It is highly homologous to STEAP1 but features four predicted transmembrane domains (instead of six for STEAP1). Unlike several STEAP family members that have oxidoreductase enzymatic activity, STEAP1B may not possess NAD(P)H oxidoreductase activity, but its heme group may still be involved in metal ion metabolism, specifically the reduction and uptake of iron and copper[5]. Studies indicate that STEAP1B, and particularly its STEAP1B2 isoform, is overexpressed in cancer cells, especially in prostate cancer, suggesting a possible role in cancer progression, and making it a candidate biomarker or therapeutic target for neoplastic diseases[1][3][4]. STEAP1B is subject to complex post-transcriptional and post-translational regulation.
