Stem cell-derived angiogenic long non-coding RNA (SCDAL), also known as AC103746.1, is a human/primate-specific lncRNA highly expressed in human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells. SCDAL is a critical upstream regulator of angiogenesis, functioning via trans-activation of growth differentiation factor 6 (GDF6) expression—mediated by recruitment of SNF5 to the GDF6 promoter—which leads to paracrine stimulation of endothelial cell angiogenesis through a VEGFR2-dependent pathway. SCDAL knockdown reduces and its overexpression enhances angiogenic and reparative functions, particularly relevant to cardiac ischemia and tissue repair. This RNA is a representative example of regulatory non-coding RNAs with identified therapeutic target potential in cardiovascular disease settings[1][3][5].
