Cytochrome P450 11B2 (CYP11B2), also known as aldosterone synthase, is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the final three steps in the biosynthesis of aldosterone, regulating blood pressure by controlling sodium and water retention and potassium excretion. It is expressed predominantly in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. Mutations or dysregulation can lead to aldosterone synthase deficiency, familial hyperaldosteronism, or primary hyperaldosteronism. Targeted inhibition of CYP11B2 is being explored as a treatment for primary hyperaldosteronism.
