Target intelligence / Profile preview

Steroid 17-alpha-hydroxylase (CYP17A1)

Target
CYP17A1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cytochrome P450, Monooxygenase
01

Overview

Steroid 17-alpha-hydroxylase (CYP17A1) is a key enzyme in steroid hormone biosynthesis, belonging to the cytochrome P450 superfamily. It exhibits both 17α-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase activities, essential for the production of glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens. Mutations in CYP17A1 can lead to congenital adrenal hyperplasia and other disorders affecting sexual development and electrolyte balance. It is considered a therapeutic target to modulate steroid hormone synthesis.
