Steroid 5α-reductase type I

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

5α-reductase type 1 is an isoenzyme of the steroid 5α-reductase family, which catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is encoded by the SRD5A1 gene and is highly expressed in liver and skin. DHT produced by this enzyme is essential for male sexual differentiation and development. Overexpression is observed during prostate cancer progression. It is targeted by 5α-reductase inhibitors like finasteride, used for benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia.
