Steroid 5 alpha-reductase 1 pseudogene 1 (SRD5A1P1, also referenced as SRD5AP1) is a processed pseudogene that displays a high sequence homology to the active steroid 5 alpha-reductase type I gene (SRD5A1), but does not encode a functional protein and has no demonstrated biological activity. It is mapped to the q24-qter region of the X chromosome and contains the typical features of a processed pseudogene, such as lack of introns and coding potential[9][10][12]. The functional enzymes in this family are involved in steroid metabolism, most notably the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, but SRD5A1P1 itself is not a viable therapeutic or diagnostic target because it does not produce a protein[3][6][9][12].
