Steroid 5-alpha-reductase type 1 (5αR1) is an enzyme encoded by the SRD5A1 gene that catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), as well as similar reductions for other steroid hormones. It is predominantly expressed in the liver and skin. It is a therapeutic target for benign prostatic hyperplasia and is implicated in various metabolic diseases and cancer.
