Steroid 5 alpha-reductase type 2 (SRD5A2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent androgen. It is highly expressed in androgen-sensitive tissues like the prostate and is crucial for male sexual development. Mutations in SRD5A2 can cause 5-alpha reductase deficiency, leading to ambiguous genitalia. It is also a therapeutic target in benign prostatic hyperplasia and male pattern baldness.
