Steroid 5-alpha-reductase type II is an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent androgen. It is encoded by the SRD5A2 gene and plays a crucial role in male sexual development. Inhibitors of this enzyme, such as finasteride and dutasteride, are used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenetic alopecia.
