Steroid hormone receptor ERR2 (ESRRB/ERRβ) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. It plays a critical role in stem cell maintenance and developmental processes, including inner ear development and photoreceptor survival. ERR2 functions by binding to specific DNA sequences (ERRE) and regulating the expression of target genes, acting as both an activator and repressor of transcription. While structurally similar to estrogen receptors, it does not bind estrogens and is considered an orphan receptor with poorly defined endogenous ligands. Its function is especially prominent during early developmental stages.
