Steroid Sulfatase (STS)

Target
STS
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Sulfatase, Hydrolase
01

Overview

Steroid sulfatase (STS) is an enzyme (EC 3.1.6.2) that catalyzes the hydrolysis of steroid sulfates into their unconjugated forms, regulating the formation and bioavailability of biologically active steroids. It is a therapeutic target in hormone-dependent cancers and its deficiency leads to X-linked ichthyosis. Inhibitors of STS, such as Irosustat, are being developed to reduce local estrogen synthesis in tumors.
