Overview

Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein pseudogene 1 (STARD1P1, also known as STARP1) is a pseudogene of the functional steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR, encoded by the STAR gene), which is essential for cholesterol transport into mitochondria—a key step in steroid hormone synthesis[1]. STARD1P1 does not encode an active protein and has no known functional, clinical, or pharmacological significance. Its association with therapeutic targeting is only indirect, through its shared homology with the functional protein-coding STAR gene. Pseudogenes are considered nonfunctional genomic elements that arise from duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes. The functional protein, Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory Protein (STARD1), is essential for steroid biosynthesis and is involved in several endocrine processes and diseases; however, its pseudogenes like STARD1P1 do not produce a protein and are not considered therapeutic targets[1].
