Target intelligence / Profile preview
Steroidogenic enzymes are a group of specialized proteins, primarily cytochrome P450 enzymes and hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, that catalyze the multi-step conversion of cholesterol into various steroid hormones [1, 4]. These hormones include glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, estrogens, and progestogens, which are essential for regulating metabolism, immune function, salt and water balance, and sexual development [5, 7]. These enzymes are predominantly expressed in the adrenal glands, gonads, and placenta, though some peripheral tissues also possess steroidogenic activity [10, 11]. In clinical medicine, these enzymes are critical therapeutic targets for treating hormone-sensitive conditions such as prostate and breast cancer, where inhibitors are used to deprive tumors of growth-promoting steroids [1, 4]. Additionally, genetic mutations in these enzymes lead to disorders like congenital adrenal hyperplasia, characterized by impaired cortisol synthesis and androgen excess [9, 10]. Pharmacological modulation of these enzymes requires careful monitoring due to the potential for systemic endocrine disruption and side effects like adrenal suppression or mineralocorticoid imbalance [1, 11].
