Sterol 24-C-methyltransferase (SMT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) to the C-24 position of sterols, a key step in the biosynthesis of ergosterol and other sterols in fungi, protozoa, plants, and some algae. It is not present in mammals, making it a promising drug target for antifungal and antiparasitic therapies. Inhibition of SMT disrupts sterol homeostasis, leading to impaired fungal/protozoal growth and viability.
