Overview

Emopamil-binding protein (EBP), also known as sterol Δ8-Δ7 isomerase, is an integral membrane protein located primarily in the endoplasmic reticulum of mammalian cells. EBP catalyzes a key step in cholesterol biosynthesis: the isomerization of the double bond from C8–C9 to C7–C8 in sterol intermediates, specifically converting 8,9-cholestenol into lathosterol. Mutations in *EBP* cause Conradi-Hünermann syndrome. Inhibition of EBP promotes oligodendrocyte formation and remyelination, and may also induce tumor cell death.
