Acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase 2 (ACAT2) is a membrane-bound enzyme primarily expressed in hepatocytes and enterocytes. It catalyzes the formation of cholesteryl esters from cholesterol and long-chain fatty acyl-CoA, which are then incorporated into lipoproteins or stored in lipid droplets. ACAT2 plays a crucial role in cholesterol homeostasis and dietary fat absorption. It is a therapeutic target for hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.
Inhibition of ACAT2 reduces cholesteryl ester formation and apoB-lipoprotein secretion.
