Overview

Sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1-c (SREBP-1c) is a transcription factor primarily regulating genes involved in lipid (especially fatty acid) and cholesterol biosynthesis. Encoded by the SREBF1 gene, SREBP-1c arises from alternative promoter usage distinct from the related isoform SREBP-1a. SREBP-1c is predominantly expressed in liver, fat, and muscle tissues, where it controls rates of *de novo* lipogenesis in response to metabolic cues such as insulin and dietary carbohydrate. SREBP-1c function is modulated by proteolytic cleavage, post-translational modification, and transcriptional regulation by hormones and sterol metabolites. Its dysregulation plays a central role in conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome [1][4][5][6][7].
