STING (Stimulator of Interferon Genes 1) is a critical adaptor protein in the innate immune system. It functions as a cytosolic DNA sensor and adaptor for DNA-sensing pathways, activating type I interferon responses. Upon detection of cytosolic DNA, cGAS synthesizes cGAMP, which binds to and activates STING, triggering downstream signaling cascades leading to the production of type I interferons and other cytokines. Mutations in STING can cause autoinflammatory diseases like SAVI.
