Overview

Stomach contents, also known as chyme or gastric juice, represent a complex physiological mixture of ingested food, water, hydrochloric acid, mucus, and digestive enzymes such as pepsin (StatPearls, NBK537005). While not a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, the chemical and physical properties of stomach contents are frequently the focus of therapeutic intervention. For example, antacids like calcium carbonate interact directly with the hydrochloric acid in the stomach contents to neutralize acidity and provide relief from dyspepsia (PubChem, CID 10112). Furthermore, the volume and acidity of these contents are significant clinical factors in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and pose a severe risk for aspiration pneumonia during medical procedures involving sedation (NIH, NIDDK). Pharmacological agents such as alginates can also interact with the stomach contents to form a physical 'raft' that floats on the surface, preventing the reflux of acidic material into the esophagus (Wikipedia, Alginic acid). Because 'Stomach contents' refers to a heterogeneous mixture and a physiological compartment rather than a discrete biological molecule, it is generally considered an incorrect entry for a specific therapeutic target database.
