STON1-GTF2A1L readthrough refers to a fusion transcript arising from adjacent genes STON1 (stonin 1) and GTF2A1L (general transcription factor IIA, 1-like). These read-through mRNAs occur infrequently and encode chimeric protein products containing elements of both stonin 1 (a vesicle trafficking protein) and GTF2A1L (a transcription factor). The biological function and clinical significance of the fusion protein have not been determined; however, genetic variation in this region has been linked to the bilaterality of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, suggesting a potential (but as yet unconfirmed) disease role. The fusion product is not yet classified as a canonical receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other established therapeutic target, and no drugs are known to interact specifically with it. The fusion is also referenced by multiple aliases (GTF2A1L, SALF, ALF) across various genomic resources.
