Stool bulk formation refers to the process of increasing stool mass and water content, usually mediated by dietary fiber or bulk-forming laxatives such as psyllium, methylcellulose, and polycarbophil. These agents are not digested and absorb water within the intestine, expanding to form soft, bulky stools that stimulate bowel contractions and promote regular defecation. The physiological mechanism is not associated with a specific molecular receptor, enzyme, or transport protein but rather is a physical effect on stool properties and colon motility.
