Overview

"Stops bleeding" refers to the physiological process of hemostasis rather than a singular molecular target or receptor (StatPearls, 2023). Hemostasis is the body's natural response to vascular injury, involving a coordinated sequence of vascular constriction, platelet plug formation, and the activation of the coagulation cascade to form a stable fibrin clot (PubMed, 2022). Because the term describes a clinical outcome or a complex biological process involving numerous proteins such as Thrombin, Factor VII, and Plasminogen, it is not classified as a standalone therapeutic target (NIH, 2021). Pharmacological interventions to stop bleeding, known as hemostatic agents, target specific components of this system; for instance, antifibrinolytics like tranexamic acid inhibit the activation of plasminogen to prevent clot degradation (StatPearls, 2023). While these therapies are critical for managing hemorrhage and coagulopathies, they carry significant safety risks, most notably the potential for inducing systemic thrombosis or thromboembolic events (PubMed, 2022).

Mechanism of action

Drugs achieve the effect of stopping bleeding by inhibiting fibrinolysis, replacing deficient coagulation factors, or directly promoting the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin to stabilize a blood clot.
