The stratum corneum intercellular matrix is a specialized extracellular structure found in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. It fills the spaces between corneocytes and plays a critical role in maintaining skin barrier function and hydration. It is primarily composed of lipids (ceramides, free fatty acids, and cholesterol) arranged in multi-lamellar bilayers, along with structural proteins, enzymes, and antimicrobial peptides. Disruption or alteration of this matrix can lead to impaired barrier function seen in various dermatological conditions.
